"Mrs Clark makes a very quick return to a sub-Alpine Australian town highlighting characters introduced in the previous book.

Perhaps unfair, but there is an inevitable comparison to the original and the characters come off as second-best neither really appealing nor empathetic.

In the final chapters the heroine's daughter - not a particularly appealing child - from a previous abusive marriage seems to take over the plot which is very offputting and it is much too "sweet" for my liking.

Not one of my favourite books from this normally dependable author.
